On The Road Again… [Part 2] - The Sky Is Falling

May 2012 Trip Home 178

After days of driving, tons of gas station stops, lot’s of whining, and way too much fast food; we had reached Arizona.

May 2012 Trip Home 179

We needed a distraction.

Something to keep us excited about the final stretch of our road trip.

Something fun to check off our spontaneous, Yeah-I’ve-done-that! To-do list.

May 2012 Trip Home 180

Ryan had talked about going to see this Meteor Crater. He explained it was out of our way, but he had been wanting to see it for awhile.

That is reason enough for me.

We drove about a half hour to find the road it was on. Found the exit sign, then kept driving.

May 2012 Trip Home 184

Just like I was explaining in PART ONE of our trip, I live for things like this. I love the randomness of it. Seeing something most people drive right by, never knowing it was there. Who would have known a giant rock from space crashed down right there in the desert.

Every few mile or so, we would pass a road sign, that said: Watch out for cows.

May 2012 Trip Home 186

We parked in a large parking lot, filled with all different types of cars and trucks.

I expected to see a few passer biers there, maybe even a few NASA enthusiasts. But apparently, we aren’t the only ones who find this type of thing fascinating, because it was quite busy.

May 2012 Trip Home 187

It wasn’t cheap to get in, I’ll tell you that. But our military discount helped.

May 2012 Trip Home 185

Right when you walk in there’s a gift shop to your left. We saved that for after the tour.

May 2012 Trip Home 194

I ended up buying a Meteor Crater coffee mug to add to my collection, and a shot glass to add to Ryan’s.

May 2012 Trip Home 193

This 50,000 year old piece of meteor had been found by local rancher.

May 2012 Trip Home 195

In the 1960’s it was on display in a museum, until 1968, when it was stolen.

May 2012 Trip Home 196

It wasn’t seen again, until 2006, where it was bought at an estate sale, in Wisconsin.

May 2012 Trip Home 197

Before we took the tour, we walked through some of the museum.

Throughout the museum, there were fun activities to help us to learn about the differences in space rocks and earth rocks.

May 2012 Trip Home 202

(Checking out the weight difference)

May 2012 Trip Home 205

(Finding out if they are magnetic or not.)

They also had a video game that let you build your own Meteor.

May 2012 Trip Home 217

They announced that one of the outdoor tours were starting. So, we decided to take a break from the museum, and go see this thing.

May 2012 Trip Home 219

They started out by telling us, the tour is an hour long. And if you decide to do it, you can’t change your mind. The doors will be locked, and you must complete the entire thing.

May 2012 Trip Home 226

My first thought, as the door slammed shut behind us, immediately locking, was that it was so windy outside!! I said quietly, “We might not make it an hour, we might just blow away. I’m so glad I brought my hoodie.”

May 2012 Trip Home 222

My second thought was; Wow. They weren’t joking about that giant crater part.

May 2012 Trip Home 224

The center of the crater.

May 2012 Trip Home 246

Our tour guide talked about many different studies being done there. For a long time they believed that this was not caused by a meteor.

I also remember her saying: To understand the speed of this meteor, it would be as if you left from New York and arrived in Los Angeles, in a total of 5 minutes. Whoa.

Fossils.

I’m not quite sure, but I think in his head, he was singing I don’t wanna miss a thing by Aerosmith. I know I was.

And back to the Museum we went.

Silly.

May 2012 Trip Home 289

Then we made our way outside to try and look around one more time. On the opposite side of the trail.

May 2012 Trip Home 290

Probably, perfectly normal. But this ray of light went from the clouds, right down to the building. I find that interesting.

Ryan: “Karey, it’s so like you to pay money to go see a meteor crater, and instead be over there taking pictures of cows.”
I nod in agreement.

May 2012 Trip Home 303

And just like that we were back in the car. With a brand new story to tell people, and an item scratched of our to-do list.

May 2012 Trip Home 311

See a real meteor crater...Check.

May 2012 Trip Home 313

Love my life… Check.

May 2012 Trip Home 312

You know how in my last post, that I thought we should just keep driving until we found that perfect place?

May 2012 Trip Home 323

And that we would just know it right when we see it?

May 2012 Trip Home 320

Well, we found it.
… Check.
